'Imagine, if you will, living in the year 2016 and not knowing what the acronym “OMG” stands for. Better yet, picture living in 2023 and earnestly asking the question: “What's a meme?”. Well, you would be Cillian Murphy.
Murphy is currently on the promo trail for Oppenheimer, a rare mass press outing for the notoriously low-key actor whose occasions of visible happiness at having to be out of the house can be counted on one hand. The massive global campaign for the Christopher Nolan film, where Murphy plays the father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, has naturally involved an endless stream of junket interviews. Murphy, however, is having none of it.
In one particular instance that's now going viral (not that he'd know what that means), his co-star, Robert Downey Jr, uploaded a video while walking through an event in Paris filled with the cast of Oppenheimer. When he lands on Murphy, his hand shoots up almost instinctively to cover the camera, barely looking away from the conversation he's having. Not today, sir.
Murphy's anti-internet agenda has been making the rounds of late, ironically, on the internet. An interview at the start of the year for his film The Party, where he revealed that he had never seen the classic ‘disappointed Cillian’ meme because he doesn't even know what a meme is prompted a wave of internet celeb interview archivists to comb through the records of his longstanding rage against the machine. In the same press run with Jamie Dornan, where he didn't realise that ‘OMG’ stood for ‘Oh my God’, he also revealed he doesn't use emojis. Naturally, he doesn't have social media of any kind. It's not worth imagining how he'd respond to having a TikTok video painstakingly described to him.
But let's face it, Cillian Murphy has got it right. The peace of a man who's never had to waste energy thinking about how to burn Elon Musk on Twitter is a hard won thing. He's probably never heard the “ATTENZIONE PICKPOCKET” lady or seen those videos of bottles of olive oil being kicked downstairs. He just rawdogs Succession, blissfully unaware of stan accounts calling Kendall Roy their babygirl. The inside of his head must be like a laundry advert – all green fields, lambs and nobody “serving cunt.”
At every turn, the internet is telling us to log off. Twitter is becoming more unbearable by the day, its users like marionettes battling rate limits, blue badges and terfs. Elsewhere, Meta has asked us to download another app to share our same thoughts on a different platform. One that looks exactly like the other platform but isn't that platform, don't worry. All the while, TikTok is sucking our brains dry of its juices like a sponge.
What if we all just… logged off? Wouldn't that be nice? What if we take a leaf out of Murphy's book and untethered ourselves from the shackles of the digital world and allow ourselves to simply exist. That seems quite nice. Maybe then, one day, we too can look blank-faced at someone as they describe something on the internet and say, with all sincerity, “What is that?”'

TAG GAME: EIGHT SHOWS TO GET TO KNOW ME
Tagged by gorgeous @lordjohnwgrey. Thank youuu! 🥰
I am a film girlie in my heart and it's hard for me to sit through any series, so this task wasn't easy. Here you go:
Sex And The City - why? Because of the plot? Nah. Because I love fashion. This is what you need to know about me.
The Queen's Gambit - this is an incredible period drama. It's not about chess, as it might seem at first glance. It is about finding the strength to face your demons and stop running away from your problems. It's about friendship and loneliness. Anya Taylor-Joy's performance is nothing short of outstanding. Her character's outfits and the locations are something else worth taking a look at.
Sherlock - an extremely intelligent high-functioning sociopath played by extremely talented Benedict Cumberbatch and amazing Andrew Scott as Moriarty. I couldn't ask for more! The best and the only one modern film adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories that I recognize. It always makes me want to pour myself a cup of earl gray tea with milk. The first two seasons are the best part of it. I rewatch it every year.
Friends - because I'm old school and this is a classic. My comfort show. It's always there for me and I ALWAYS make references to it confusing my friends.
How I Met Your Mother - it's like Friends, but it's not like Friends. Hard to explain. It is just very good in its own way.
House, M.D. - cynical, harsh. Why did I even like it? I can't articulate my thoughts, but it's a masterpiece.
The Office - the best meme supplier. The creators of the show managed to keep the perfect balance between comedy and drama (80/20). Do you remember the time without smartphones and social media? Well, this show is a warm blanket of nostalgia. It's realistic and kind. The show is here to tell us that there's a lot of beauty in ordinary things and that we're all not perfect and it's actually okay. (It also has my otp #2 - Jim and Pam. Couple goals. And Pam has the best female character development I've ever seen so far.) Btw, season 8 doesn't exist for me.
Peaky Blinders - this is the real owner of this page. The reason why I joined Tumblr. I'll never get tired of saying that season 1 is the best hours of television history. And I'll also never get tired of saying how disappointed and heartbroken I was after watching season 3. Why did I keep watching this series anyway? 3 reasons: Cillian Murphy's acting, the cinematography, and the soundtrack. I think I have the same relationship with this show that Tommy has with Grace. I'll never get over it.
Tagging (no pressure): @i-just-look-at-pictures @almightytrashcan @doyouknowwhoiam2 @rousie @tommyxgrace-always @peakyv + anyone interested

Excerpts:
"A testament to his universally attractive features: as a toddler, my daughter would call him “Kiki” and try to stroke his face."
"For a man who has always steadfastly avoided press attention, the new scrutiny found him somewhat overwhelmed. “He is the world’s best actor and the world’s worst celebrity,” said his co-star Emily Blunt recently when asked about his attitude to fame. Murphy acts like a spooked cat around most journalists; he has no social media platform. He specialises in an expression poised between disappointed and bemused. “Everyone knows that I’m the most fucking memed awkward person on the internet,” he cringes when I mention a TikTok that sees him ambling into the Golden Globes alongside the caption: “When you made plans while you were feeling extroverted and now you have to attend.” “Can’t I just be normal?” he says. “It is nuts, you know?”
“I am enjoying it, because I’m choosing to enjoy it, and I think there’s a distinction,” he says. “And this is celebrating the work that we did, and you have to go into it with an open heart.”
When he’s trying to get his head into a project, he’s been known to go for multiple runs (he used to run 10km distances competitively), although today he’ll more likely walk his dog, a black Lab called Scout. “I don’t think it’s ambition,” he says when asked if he is goal-oriented. “But I love challenging myself. And if you get to a level at something, you go, ‘Oh, what if we push this further and go to the next level and see what happens there?'"
It’s one of the reasons he admires Christopher Nolan: he shares the filmmaker’s unsparing efficiency and desire to get things done. “I’ve never seen a more effective use of time on a film set, ever, in my whole career,” he says. “Film sets are so wasteful normally, it’s like a picnic, everyone just sitting around eating snacks. It drives me mad.”
Donatella Versace: “I wanted to collaborate with someone unexpected,” she says. “It was so interesting to work with him. Cillian loves clothes, and understands and appreciates the subtle details – he has an instinctive taste and natural eye for style.” As for what makes his screen presence so magnetic, she refers, as everybody does, to those steely blues. “There is something magical about Cillian that I instinctively connect with, and his mesmerising eyes of course.”
"his professional intensity, means it’s easy to forget that in private he’s a total goof. He’s an incredible mimic, and loves dad jokes, wordplay and godawful puns; I’ve often said that if the work dries up in acting, he’d be a great headline writer at The Sun."
"two days after the Oscars ceremony. He had arrived in New Zealand with Yvonne and Aran, currently acting in the new Taika Waititi film. Murphy had “catastrophic” jetlag, and was still feeling “pretty dazed”. Following one of the “longest awards seasons in history”, thanks to the actors’ strike, he was still getting used to having the statuette in his life. “It’s bizarre. I see it and think, ‘What the fuck’, and get a shock.”
Article here, by Jo Ellison, who I learned is Enda Walsh's wife. 🤓 Too many interesting tidbits to single anything out.

'Cillian Murphy is one of the most gifted performers to ever work in show business. Many others similar to him have come and gone, but few have had the kind of influence he did on the industry and his fellow performers. In addition to his outstanding acting abilities, Murphy has demonstrated his versatility on the set of every film or television production.
The role of Thomas Shelby, the main character in the Peaky Blinder TV series, is Cillian Murphy’s finest achievement. This TV series helped the Dunkirk actor become very well-known and respected, and he was named one of the finest Irish cinema actors ever. But despite such fame and recognition, the actor was not accustomed to the social media world.
Cillian Murphy Finds Out About His Social Media Memes
The rumors about Cillian Murphy’s skill are entirely accurate. His numerous standout performances in several of Christopher Nolan’s films attest to his enormous influence on both his peers and the film industry. Movies like The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Dunkirk, and Oppenheimer are among his best works.
He demonstrated his ability to execute and deliver world-class parts regardless of the background with these amazing films. One of the projects where his performance especially stood out was Peaky Blinders. But Cillian Murphy has shockingly revealed that he has very low to no contact with the internet or social media and is also not aware of what memes are.
Reporter: “Are you aware of the disappointed Cillian Murphy meme on the internet?”
Murphy: “The what?”
Reporter: “The disappointed Cillian Muphy meme.”
Murphy: “What’s a meme?”
Reporter: “So in junkets, your fans on the internet are saying that when you’re not speaking sometimes you look like you’re disappointed in someone a long way away. What do you think of that?”
Murphy: “I’m glad I know what a meme is. These days can be a little long sometimes, y’know?”
Timothy Spall: “You just made him terribly self-conscious of himself at a moment obviously, when he’s completely un-self-conscious. You’ve ruined his life.”
During an interview with NME, while promoting the movie, The Party, the reporter asked Cillian Murphy if he was informed about his meme to which the actor replied with what a meme was. Although the reporter gave a brief description of a meme, he found it a bit funny that his fans and followers have been putting good use to his content.
Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer Performance
Murphy has so far had a good career and built a name for himself through his roles in Christopher Nolan’s films and Peaky Blinders. However, the renowned director recently gave the actor the chance to portray the title role of the notorious physicist in his summer movie, Oppenheimer. He gave a stunning performance throughout the movie and it was a breathtaking experience for all his fans and followers.
The movie has made a whopping $230 million against a budget of $100 million at the worldwide box office since its release in the theatres...'

Y’all the reason there haven’t been disappointed Cillian [tm] memes for the Oppenheimer press junket (the handful of times Christ could drag Cillian out of his house before strike and Cillain got to go home) is because they’ve been editing him out
Or rather they’ve been zoom edits
Very rarely are the wide-shots longer than a few moments, it’s always focused on whoever is talking
So we’re not getting clips of RDJ or Matt Damon talking extensively while Cillian is staring into the soul of the universe
#cillian murphy#disappointed cillian murphy meme#oppenheimer#it is cute how happy and smiley he is tho#he does seem more excited#he's still dissociating tho i'd bet money

Interviewer: “So Cillian, have you ever seen the Cillian Murphy Is Disappointed meme?”
Cillian Murphy: “The what?”
Interviewer: “The Cillian Murphy Is Disappointed meme.”
Cillian (genuinely confused): “Meme? What’s a meme?”
Interviewer: “...”
Me: (proudly) “That’s my boy...”
